Time For A Smile Makeover?

Not sure how to bring out the best in your smile? Let our Canterbury dental team help!

Patient after cosmetic dentistryAlthough we may not be entirely out of the woods yet, there is little doubt that there is more optimism in the air than at this time last year. Some of you will, no doubt, have had your first post lockdown pint or taken part in some other activity.

The more pleasant and sunnier days have probably also helped to lift our spirits as well.

It is usually around this time of the year when people start to look at ways to renew their life with new clothes, healthy eating and other things that make us feel good about ourselves. With restrictions in place for local dental practices for the last year or so, we know that many of you also can’t wait to do something about making your teeth look nicer again as well.

Some of you may have managed to save some money during the pandemic as you couldn’t take holidays or go to restaurants etc. You might wish to consider spending some of this on a smile makeover at Bradley and Partners Dental and Implant Clinic.

What is a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is often not a single treatment but can be made up of a combination of treatments depending on the patient’s needs. Most of us probably have an idea of how we’d like our teeth improved; often something as straightforward as having them whitened; but for the best results, you should arrange an appointment with one of our cosmetic dental team so that we can assess and discuss your needs with you. In addition to working out a treatment plan to suit your budget and requirements, we will also check your teeth and gums for any problems that might be present. You wouldn’t, for example, fit dental veneers to a tooth that had a cavity. Gum health too will be checked and treated so that you have a healthy mouth before any cosmetic dental treatment can start.

Treatment options

As we have noted, the treatments that you may require will depend on your circumstances. It may well be that you have almost perfect teeth and simply require a straightforward teeth whitening procedure, but other’s needs might be more complex.

The following are some of the treatment options available, along with possible situations where they might be suitable.

Dental implants – Although some may not include these in the ‘smile makeover’ category as they are predominantly a restorative treatment; there is little doubt that however nice the rest of your teeth look, your smile will be well and truly spoiled if there is a gap in them!  Dental implants offer an excellent way of replacing a missing tooth and are the most natural looking as well, blending in nicely with the rest of your teeth.

Orthodontics – If your teeth are crooked, having them whitened will only highlight this fact. For that reason, many patients will have orthodontic treatment before they have their teeth whitened. There are a number of methods that can be used and will depend on the severity of the problem. For example, for general teeth straightening, the near invisible ‘Invisalign’ system might be used, whereas if you have a minor issue that needs correcting, a faster acting system such as Cfast may be more suitable.

Veneers – Most teeth veneers are made from porcelain and are usually attached to a prepared tooth surface to improve them where they are heavily stained or have suffered problems such as chips or cracks. They are a good long term option, lasting for around ten years with good care before they need to be replaced.  Those who have stopped smoking but still have ‘smokers teeth’ might find this treatment especially useful.

Teeth whitening – The most popular cosmetic treatment that we offer at Bradley and Partners Dental and Implant Clinic. This treatment offers patients a non-invasive dental procedure that can whiten their teeth by several shades. The results last for a number of months and repeat treatments can be applied with no ill effect. Some patients come to us to have this as a ‘one off’ treatment for a special occasion, whereas others have this done on an ongoing basis so that they can maintain a level of whiteness that they are happy with. Whichever you choose, we are happy to help you.

These are the most common treatments used, but others, such as cosmetic bonding and white fillings that match the colour of your teeth, can assist too. We do recommend that you avoid having cosmetic dental treatments that you can buy online and instead, come to us for a personal assessment so that we can help you to get the results that you are hoping for.
