Cfast Braces – What Are They And Am I A Suitable Candidate?

Are you looking to improve a crooked smile? This orthodontic system might be for you!

Dentist with x-rayA lot gets written about Invisalign braces, and for good reason. They are discreet, comfortable and removable for eating and cleaning. They are useful for a range of treatments, including more complex straightening; for example involving the teeth towards the rear of the mouth that you don’t generally see.

Although they are excellent, there are other systems which might be considered to be more suitable where more minor corrections are needed.

Although the Bradley and Partners Dental and Implant Clinic prefers that all teeth are straight so patients have a correct bite; understandably, it is those who have a visibly crooked smile that are most likely to seek out orthodontic treatment at our Canterbury clinic.

The ‘social six’ smile

Few people see our back teeth when we smile and therefore it is not surprising that patients focus on straightening the front six top and bottom teeth. These are known in dental circles as the ‘social six’. Even a single crooked tooth at the front can detract from an otherwise attractive smile and for this reason, there are orthodontic systems available that are designed specifically for this particular problem.

Partially because teeth at the front of our mouth are single rooted, these are easier to correct and don’t take as long as rear teeth. For this reason, some orthodontics, including Invisalign, may not be the most appropriate treatment for this purpose.

Naturally, we will need to examine your teeth to determine the best treatment plan, but one of the most common treatments that we use at our Canterbury practice for this purpose is Cfast braces.

Cfast is a widely used ‘wire and bracket’ approach to teeth straightening. The components are made in tooth-coloured materials to make them as discreet as possible. These work by applying gentle pressure to the teeth, encouraging them towards their desired position. It should be noted that these are suitable only for cosmetic purposes and other options may need to be considered where functional issues are a concern.

Why Cfast and some frequently asked questions

Cfast braces are popular for straightening front teeth for a number of reasons. Not only are they more discreet than traditional braces but they are also fast acting. The time needed to straighten teeth will vary from person to person but is generally between 4 and 6 months. This is often a shorter period of time than for general orthodontics which can take well over a year to achieve the desired outcome.

How will I know if I am suitable for them?

As mentioned earlier, you will need to be examined by our Canterbury cosmetic dentists in order to determine if this is the correct orthodontic for your own situation. We will also make sure that your mouth is healthy and that any issues such as gum disease are under control before the treatment starts.

Does the treatment hurt?

Because pressure is applied to the teeth, patients may feel a little discomfort for a few days after the braces have been fitted. This usually goes away within a few days however and you should soon become used to your new braces.

Can I eat normally?

We generally advise that patients avoid eating harder foods and especially sticky foods such as toffees. Aside from harder foods dislodging the braces, stickier foods may become trapped in the wires and brackets and can lead to tooth decay.

How do I clean my teeth?

For the reasons mentioned above, keeping your teeth clean is essential and you may need to focus on this a little more for the duration of the treatment. Naturally, it isn’t as straightforward as cleaning your teeth without them but, with a little practice, you should be able to manage this quite easily. We advise that you arrange an appointment with our hygienist to discuss this in more detail.

Is it expensive?

Cfast, like other cosmetic orthodontics is only available privately. If you are interested in this treatment, we recommend that you arrange to have a ‘no obligation’ consultation with us. Firstly we will be able to ascertain if you are a suitable candidate and also discuss the cost implication as well as the payment plans that we have available to help you spread the cost of your treatment.

At Bradley and Partners Dental and Implant Clinic, our experienced cosmetic dental team will make sure that you have the correct treatment to help you have a great looking smile. Straight and even teeth are an essential part of this. For those who wish to take a further step, why not also take a look at having your teeth professionally whitened too?
